Description:

Super Mario Star Scramble 2 is a traditional Mario platformer: collect coins, jump on top of enemies, and don't touch anything that looks alive or you die. It's also totally not a traditional Mario game: no brick-breaking, no powerups, and no flags on poles at the end of each level. Instead, every level starts with a locked door, and you must find all of the sun icons in each level in order to unlock the door (and then make it back to the door to beat the level.)

2 worlds of 10 levels each followed by a nasty boss fight vs. Bowser make Super Mario Star Scramble 2 a game that you can beat in an hour if you're good at platformers. That said, there's a good variety of challenges in this game. Some of the suns are obvious, others require quick reflexes, precise timing, good search skills, or puzzle solving ability to acquire. And of course, there is the ubiquitous timer present in the side scrolling Mario platformers, so you can't just spend all day looking for that purple switch you need to throw to get to the last sun icon.

One thing to look out for: Mario is slippery in this game. Single-square landings require a lot more skill in Super Mario Star Scramble 2 than they do in the NES and SNES Mario platformers. Combine that with the inability to become Super Mario (i.e. take a hit from an enemy without dying), and you have a truly old-school game where one touch kills no matter what. You can expect to die quite a bit as you get used to the sheer retro-ness, but it's worth it to get into this cool classic.
